A Life Well Lived....RIP Ed Lassen

Image
We would all love to live a life well lived.  Wow that's a mouthful for an opening line, but it's true and I was recently asked to write a quick note about a guy who did just that---lived a life well lived. His name is Ed Lassen and he is my sister's husbands father.  For you visual learners my sister Sheila married a guy named Mark Lassen and his dad was named Ed Lassen.  I guess I could have said my brother in laws father, but I'm doing this on one cup of coffee.  Anyway here is what I wrote in tribute to a great man....Mr. Ed Lassen: Ed Lassen.  Did you know that it is physically impossible to say those words three times without smiling?  Try it….I’ll wait.  Ed Lassen, Ed Lassen, Ed Lassen----see I bet you smiled. That alone is quite a legacy.  We all hope to live like Ed, Eddy, Sonny----or whatever you called him--so that one day people smile when they mention your name.  One can only hope, but for Ed it was a reality.  Whet...

Turning Fifty is Nifty

This year I will celebrate the  2 nd anniversary of my turning 50 years of age and I’m cool with that because there is really only one other choice besides aging!   And I recently stopped saying I’m approaching the 12 anniversary of my 40 th birthday, so I am making progress.   Speaking of 40’s this blog is for you kids as YOU prepare you to cross this big milestone.   If you are dreading crossing over, remember 50 is the new 40 and the goal is to outlive Keith Richards.   So here are a couple of tips for you punks approaching your 50 th birthday:     Celebrate the crap out of turning 50.   You made it and I know some of the crazy things you all did as teenagers and beyond.   Heck some of you were doing stupid, life threatening things just last week.   Keep it up and remember tomorrow is not promised to anyone.   Celebrate 50 and embrace it.   Warning---you do not recover from hangovers like you use...

The Appropriate Response

It was about this time last week that the world was ready to lynch Neil Patrick Harris for botching the Oscars.  It’s a wonder that anyone signs up for that gig as you are performing in front of  a group of performers.  It’s like going out to eat with a chef, no matter who cooks the food he/she is going to find something wrong with it.  I thought he did a good job, but one line seemed to get everyone’s knickers in a twist----everyone but the person he directed it towards. This perceived faux paus for Mr. Harris occurred after the Oscar for Best Documentary, Short Subject went to Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1.  Director Ellen Goosenberg Kent and Dana Perry took the stage to accept the award and Mrs. Perry was wearing a very unique ensemble.  I am going to plead ignorance when it comes to fashion and one peak into my closet and you will agree that I have no expertise on this matter whatsoever.  Let’s just say it was different, and different at t...

Look Up....

N Midland Ave & 5th Ave - Google Maps : My Tribute To George Fee The passing of Mr. George Fee recently hit me hard, and in a manner that caught me off guard.  You see George and I were not great friends.  We went to the same high school together, but we were in different grades.  With that separation comes different classes, different teachers, and often different friends.  But George and I shared a passion together in the 80’s and that was the sport of lacrosse, and in the spring on 1981 we were on the same varsity team at the prestigious Nyack High School.  Prestigious in the manner that if you lived in a certain zip code, completed eighth grade, and could find the actual building on the corner of 5 th and Midland, you were in!  In 1981 I was a senior and George was a junior.  I played midfield and George played attack. I was righty and George was lefty----all of this will come into play later.  We were teammates and for guys that...
